Statistics Order Flow Downwave Sierra Chart

Description

Most tools show you that something happened. This study tells you whether it matters.

Market Progression Suite measures every developing wave against its own history and prints the answer as a Z-score on every bar. A Z-score of +1.0 means one standard deviation above what this market normally does; -2.0 means two below. The question it answers is simple: is this normal, or is this out of the ordinary? You stop guessing and start reading a number.

What You Get From It

  • A verdict, not a picture. Volume profiles, delta histograms and bubbles show scattered observations. Here, every reading is normalized against the statistical distribution of all previous waves in the chart. Elevated volume stops being “looks heavy” and becomes +2.1 standard deviations.
  • Measured at every bar, not only at events. The five metrics update at the hard right edge on every tick, bar by bar, as the wave develops. You watch the reading build while the wave is live, not after the wave is done.
  • Precise entries. The Z-score scale is a true coordinate system. You can define entries at exact levels: only take continuation longs while bid-ask delta holds above -1.0, treat volume past +2.5 as your exhaustion marker. No eyeballing, no repainting, so a backtest sees the same numbers you saw live.
  • Rule-based signals and automation. Because the output is a plain number on every bar, any condition you trade by hand becomes a rule a machine can check: readable from other studies, scriptable in ACSIL, ready for automated strategies. What you state as “delta above minus one” is exactly what the study publishes.
  • Journaling that means something. You can write: entered when delta volume was ahead by +1.2 z-score units while price movement was behind by -0.4. Months later that sentence is still precise, and you can scan your journal for patterns: what did my winners read at entry, what did my losers read?
  • Faster than it has any right to be. Live calculation runs in microseconds per update, typically below 50, even with half a million bars of history in the chart. Every ofv study is engineered to that standard: full functionality, no chart lag, no trade-off to accept.
  • No repainting. Once a bar’s data prints, it never changes. What you backtest is what you would have seen live.
  • Separate statistics per direction. One study instance for upwaves, one for downwaves, each compared only against its own history. Upwave behavior against historical upwaves, never mixed.

The Five Analytics Components

Each module turns one order flow metric into a Z-score. Enable or disable each on its own.

  • Total Volume Analytics — cumulative wave volume against the historical volume distribution
  • Bid-Ask Delta Analytics — cumulative ask volume minus bid volume, against the historical delta distribution
  • Price Movement Analytics — wave price range in ticks, against the historical range distribution
  • Up vs. Down Ticks Analytics — trade count delta (upticks minus downticks), for activity that shows in frequency rather than volume
  • T (Elapsed Time) Analytics — how long the wave has run, against what a wave normally takes by this bar count

Every feature also exists as a bar-on-bar line: what this single bar contributed, measured against what a single bar normally contributes. The wave line shows where the wave stands; the bar-on-bar line shows what is happening right now.

A standard line prints alongside each metric as the visual reference for the statistical norm.

How It Works

The study pools every historical wave in the chart’s evaluation range and calculates the mean and standard deviation of each metric. As the current wave develops, its running values print as Z-scores against that distribution, updated on every tick.

Each reading is conditional: a feature is measured against what a wave of that length normally shows. A long wave is not flagged as unusual merely for being long. The same logic applies bar on bar, which is why a quiet opening hour and a fast afternoon read differently instead of sharing one average.

Wave boundaries come from the ofv Control Study, the shared control study of the product suite. Its reversal settings define the pivots; this study follows them exactly. Run multiple instances on one chart, each on a different Control Study configuration (Ref1 to Ref4), and compare how the same wave reads under different scopes.

Independent correction factor and shift inputs per module adjust the sensitivity and baseline of each Z-score scale to your own framework.
